Evaporative Dry Eye - MGD

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

blocked_glands

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the root cause of Evaporative Dry Eye. MGD occurs when glands become blocked over time, limiting the release of lipids (oils) to your tear film. While MGD may not always affect vision1, it can undermine patients’ quality of life enough that they often seek out ways to find relief.

Many potential causes of or contributing factors to MGD, including age and hormonal changes exists. Although these conditions that leave you at risk to develop dry eye are uncontrollable, external factors can alse contribute to or exacerbate the problem. Some of these external factors occur everyday, like contact lens wear or use of certain cosmetics.

If the glands remain blocked, the condition can deteriorate, sometimes causing glands to cease function entirely. For this reason, it may be in your best interest to intervene earlier rather than later.
